Doing Business in China

On January 31, 2018, we had the pleasure to host Richard Lan, one of TandemLauch’s Limited Partners, and his colleague Cindy Zhang, for a Lunch & Learn on how to do business in Asia and more particularly in China.


Richard Lan is a Partner at Amalan Capital, a private equity company investing in small and medium sized enterprises in Canada and Grimsey Capital Partners, a private company providing investment and consulting services for cross border M&A transactions. Past deals span a wide range of industries, including technology, consumer electronics, manufacturing and healthcare. Richard is also a Mentor at the Founder Institute and is part of the Réseau Anges Québec (a network of financial angels and private investors who identify, finance and mentor innovative companies with high growth potential).

Richard is an accomplished executive with extensive domestic & international experience (Canada, U.S, China and Europe). He has consistently achieved optimal utilization of resources by developing, delivering, managing operations through process improvement and cultivation of strong business relationships. He was formally recognized for excellence achieved in operational and financial management leading to several international expatriate assignments in China and France. 

His experience in industry included responsibilities such as Regional Finance Director & Executive Committee member for Mead Johnson Europe and senior leadership positions for Bristol-Myers-Squibb Canada, China and France.

Cindy Zhang brings expertise in strategic planning, global expansion, as well as business and market intelligence.

Both Richard and Cindy are part of the Grimsey Capital, a boutique investment and consulting firm that offers investment and advisory services on cross border M&A transactions between Canadian and overseas companies. They have advised several North American companies starting partnerships with Asia in the past and accepted to share their tips and tricks on how to exchange and negotiate with Chinese partners.

The Lunch & Learn allowed to cover various topics from market trends, government and business policies to business etiquette and body language.

Lunch & Learn sessions are hosted at TandemLaunch twice a month. We were glad to have a presentation and interactive Q&A about doing business in Asia, given that our ties with the continent have been strengthening over the past few years.

In early 2017, we announced a strategic partnership with Cap Vista, the strategic investment arm of the Defence Science and Technology Agency of Singapore with whom we were pleased to catch-up a few weeks ago at CES 2018.

From November 27 to December 8, our portfolio company Wavelite was selected to participate to the Startup Global Program in Taipei, Taiwan –also leveraging the opportunity to visit OEM manufacturers in Asia.

They are not the only ones interested in partnering with Asian manufacturers: ORA has been travelling repeatedly to China to ensure the best quality for their GrapheneQTM headphones.

Finally, C2RO Cloud Robotics will also be travelling to China in the near future to attend CES Asia 2018 from June 13 to 15 in Shanghai. They will be co-hosting a booth with Qihan Sanbot Robotics with whom they announced a strategic partnership this week.
