Start-Ups in Materials: If you’re not on the edge, you’re taking up too much space

“Wulff Lecture, Spring 2017
Speaker: Dr. Dan Button, President and CEO at AIRY:3D, Inc.

Building materials-based companies can change the world and generate tremendous financial reward—but it’s hard.

Consider this a chance to learn lessons in the new materials venture arena from a veteran of far-reaching new materials businesses—some in Fortune 500 companies like DuPont and Corning, and many spun out of MIT and other leading universities. He will share advice and experiences learned from launching VC-financed start-ups and bringing to market new technologies that have become industry standards. Several featured breakthrough materials technologies have changed the world, particularly in consumer electronics and automotive industries.

The Wulff Lecture is an introductory, general audience, entertaining lecture that aims to educate, inspire, and encourage MIT undergraduates to take up study of materials science and engineering and related fields. The entire MIT community, particularly freshmen, is invited to attend. The Wulff Lecture honors the late Professor John Wulff, a skilled, provocative, and entertaining teacher who conceived of a new approach to teaching general chemistry and inaugurated the popular freshman subject, 3.091 Introduction to Solid State Chemistry.”
